Hello- I really would like to see rating statistics along the lines of SSDF for the Macintosh chess software.

Otherwise I won't buy it-since I like to rate myself playing against the computer. Do you have an estimate for average ELO (European) at 3 minutes / move? Has your Mac HIARCS engine played against Windows-based chess software? Maybe you can post a match (30 games if possible to reduce error) against a Wintel machine, and we can extrapolate strength from the SSDF ELO rating for the Wintel machine.

Click to expand. The Elo rating for Hiarcs MAC will depend on the processor your MAC has. The same applies on PCs.

The more powerful/faster the processor, the greater the playing strength, whatever the time control. Hiarcs MAC is a much later version than Hiarcs9 on the PC, and is probably around 30 maybe 40 Elo stronger than Hiarcs 9 PC. The SSDF has a rating for the original ChessBase PC version Hiarcs9 playing at 40/2 and based on games using, I believe, Pentium3/1200 MHz machines. I don't think the SSDF is likely to be buying MACs to enable a more direct comparison. The only result from a purchaser I have seen showed At 4+2 Hiarcs MAC - Ruffian2 12.5-7.5 At 25+5 Hiarcs MAC - Ruffian 2 14.5-5.5 Hope that helps a little. The SSDF are a voluntary organisation and do not have Macintosh computers to test on. Mac HIARCS 9.6 is significantly stronger than its PC windows HIARCS 9 cousin on equal hardware.

This is based on thousands of internal test games. So based on the SSDF figures that puts HIARCS 9 on a Athlon/1.2Ghz at 2739 Elo, it is safe to assume HIARCS 9.6 on a Mac G4/1.2Ghz will perform better. Any Elo figure will depend on what Mac hardware you are using, a G4/1Ghz Mac will perform above 2700 Elo. I heard of some early scores from a customer on Mac G4/1.25Ghz against Ruffian 2: HIARCS 9.6 won 14.5-5.5 at Game/25+5s a move.

HIARCS 9.6 won 12.5-7.5 at Game/4+2s a move. If you like to rate yourself against the computer, Sigma Chess HIARCS Pro is perfect for this because not only can you set the Elo you want to play against (machine performance allowing), you can also have your games rated and presented graphically in Elo progression. Best wishes, Mark. I bought the game only today so I have not had much time to try it out.

I already had Hiarcs for the Palm. A few comments. 1) On my dual processor Mac G5, the analysis runs about 200,000 nodes per second and reaches 12 plies in a few seconds. This is comparable to Fritz on my 2 GHz PC.

Of course this does not prove playing strength, which to me is almost irrelevant except for analysis. 2) Hiarcs runs as a UCI engine under the Sigma interface. Sigma Lite is free, but some functions are not available unless one pays extra.

Sigma Chess 6.2.1 Free Download For Mac Download

Buying Hiarcs does not unlock these functions. If I want to use all the functions, I have to pay an extra $20. There should be an option to buy both at the same time, I don't like to pay twice. Of course all specific Hiarcs features will run under Sigma Lite, but. This is the first heavyweight chess program for the Mac, so Mac owners who do not have a PC (and those like me who do, but want to play chess at work on their Macs.) shoud rejoice and buy this program immediately. I own Fritz8, Chessmaster 9 and 10 for the PC, Hiarcs, Chess Genius, and Chess Tiger for the Palm, and now Hiarcs for the Mac. I guess I can never get enough.(so whydahell am I spending most of my time playing Hearts of Iron 2 on my PC?) Henri.

This is a good thread that I will save in case I buy the mini-mac. I think more data is needed however.

There are some assumptions being made here (like Athlon/1.2 GHz. The Elo rating for Hiarcs MAC will depend on the processor your MAC has. The same applies on PCs.

HIARCS on a G4/1.2Mhz is approx. The same speed as on the old Athlon/1.2Ghz being used by SSDF.

I never said HIARCS 9.6 is 50 Elo stronger than HIARCS 9, although that's a reasonable guess on your behalf;-). I gave 40 games as an example, not to show correlation to SSDF.

As another example I heard it beat Deep Sjeng 1.6 by 16-4. Please note the SSDF rating list is based on a pool of computer software programs playing each other. It does not show how they perform against humans, let alone humans with different playing styles. The Mac has been neglected for too long, its a nice platform.

On the GUI front, all the praise should be for Ole Christensen, the author of Sigma Chess. It is a quality GUI with a lot of capabilities. Best wishes, Mark. The interface has a menu item under 'analyze' that says 'multiple lines', but it doesn. Click to expand.I bought hiarcs/sigma yesterday, only buying hiarcs and leaving Sigma at Sigma Light. I am very disappointed at one inability. With hiarcs 7 for the mac, I could enter an entire game in monitor mode, ask it to analyze, with, say 30 seconds per move, and after a time come back and print the analysis.

It would show the evaluation at each move and the principal line. Thus, at any move in which the evaluation changed significantly in my disfavor, I could look at the principal line and identify my mistake/blunder. If the pro version of Sigma can do this, I will buy it. Would someone familiar with the pro version please advise me. Thanks, Herb.

Hi Mark- The issue I am addressing here is whether SSDF rated play can be correlated to human rated play (European pool), call it 'Human'. I believe there is a correlation between European Human play and the computer generated SSDF play. Granted it is approximate and I am familiar with the arguments about ratings inflation of USCF vs. Fide, Euro vs US, etc, but I cannot believe that human Elo in Europe cannot correlate to the SSDF list. So, to prove this point, below is a table that shows Computer versus Human play for various models, and the SSDF rating for these same computers (granted there is a time difference since the games were played as early as 1987-1991 for humans, and until this year for computers). As you can see, there is definitely a correlation IMO. I consider the 'Against Human' rating to be 'close' if within 150 points (nearly 1 class).

Also for less than 30 games your error will be greater than 5%. In fact, I recall an August 1997 interview with the SSDF chairman where he pointed out even after many games the ratings can change dramatically. Here is the exerpt: 'Question: But undoubtedly there are cases where SSDF has missed the mark with anew program? Answer: Yes, Mephisto Polgar, for instance. In 1989, after 94 games, Mephisto Polgar was given the rating 2057 +/- 57. Now it has played 1693 games and has a rating of 1973 +/- 17. Obviously, the first rating was too high and Polgar was thus one of the computers that lay slightly outside its' 95% interval.'

But in general, the SSDF rating does seem to track, roughly, the Human rating. Also SSDF does presumeably, or seemingly so, try to correlate its computer Elo rating with the human pool, if you read this exerpt::: 'SSDF is a Swedish organization that tests computer chess programs by matches on tournament time control. They publish the results in the famous SSDF list. Also calibration of the ELO numbers is done by computer vs.human matches.' (emphasis added; though perhaps this was referring to the 1987-1991 era. RL SSDF list (complete) from Main page CALIBRATING RESULTS (from: ) Our list's level is based on following computers Tournament Performance Rating against humans.

The games were played between 1987 and 1991. LEGEND: It's a bit hard to read, but there are five columns, arranged thus: Computer: / Rating v. Humans: / Games v. Humans: / SSDF Rating / Close? Computer = Model, etc Rating v.

Humans = ELO from the 1987-1991 match against rated Humans SSDF Rating = current (2005) SSDF rating for these computers Close? = Yes, No if within (or not within) 150 ELO points or so for greater than 9 games; otherwise add question mark. You really need several hundred games however, but I think you can see that there is a correlation between the SSDF ELO and Computer vs.

If the pro version of Sigma can do this, I will buy it. Would someone familiar with the pro version please advise me. Click to expand. As far as I can determine (I have sigma pro only for one day), you can do it, except that the only analysis that is shown is the evaluation (for example +1.2). Click to expand.I think you can do what you want with Sigma Lite. Registering Sigma will allow Monitor mode, but this 'Monitor mode' simply means that the computer provides realtime analysis as you move the pieces about.

Sigma Chess 6.2.1 Free Download For Mac Windows 10

It means that you want the computer to 'watch over your shoulder' and 'kibitz'. What you describe you want is a 'batch' computer annotation, where the computer analyzes the whole game. Here's how to do a 'batch' computer analysis with Sigma Lite: (1) Enter the game using 'Manual' mode, not 'Monitor' mode. ( Use the dropdown menu obtained by holding down the mouse button on the icon second from left on the bottom of the game window, or go to the menu item Level: Playing Mode and Level, and select 'Manual'. (2) After entering your game: Click the 'Undo All' button near the bottom left of the game window, or use the menu item: Game: Undo all moves. (3) Use the menu item: Analyze: Analyze Game.

Here, you can select now long HIARCS will analyze each move - you can enter 30 seconds as 00:30 in the Time: Analysis Time per move: box. A nice feature is to check the 'Filter: Skip positions (don't store analysis) where HIARCS 9.60 UCI agrees with the move. That way, when you come back and look at the game, you will see only the positions where HIARCS has a different suggestion. If you are only interested in seeing where you can improve, then you can also select the check box to ignore either Black or White, which will cut the amount of time HIARCS takes to analyze your game in half. (4) Go to the menu item: Sigma: Preferences: Scores and Analysis Now set the items to your taste. Note that 'multiple lines' here does not mean 'multiple PVs', it just means the various items reported will be separated by newlines.

(4) Go off and do something else while HIARCS analyzes your game, if you like. Click to expand. You can analyze a game using ExaChess and HIARCS, and all you need is ExaChess Lite and Sigma Chess Lite.

Sigma Chess 6.1 is compatible with ExaChess - just put an alias of Sigma Chess 6.1 in the ExaChess 'Engines' folder. Then you can select 'Sigma Chess Lite' in the 'Analyze' game option in ExaChess. However, the actual engine used will be whatever engine you have last selected in Sigma Chess, not necessarily Sigma Chess itself. In general, you will want HIARCS selected inside Sigma Chess. I agree that ExaChess has better controls for playing back games with multiple variations.

It has the playback buttons 'previous line' and 'next line' that let you play out the variations, which Sigma Chess does not. So, even if you analyzed your game with HIARCS using the Sigma Chess 'Analyze Game' option, it might be easier to follow the HIARCS PVs on the board by saving the analyzed game as a.PGN file, then opening that file with ExaChess Lite to play it over.
